The glaciers of the Himalayas are rapidly melting, leading to both extreme floods and severe water crises. Nearly two billion people rely on these water sources, and immediate action is essential to slow the melting process.
In partnership with the Bright Ice Initiative and Indian Institute of Technology Indore, our field trial started in September 2024 at Chhota Shigri Glacier, India, which focuses on testing innovative solutions, such as increasing surface reflectivity with lightweight ecologically safe reflective materials. This three-year trial, led by global experts, aims to develop an ecologically safe and effective method to preserve the glaciers.
Project Highlights:
- Testing in real glacial conditions with multiple scenarios
- Collaboration with experts from India, the US, and beyond
- Aiming to establish a long-term solution by 2027 to protect Himalayan glaciers
- Presenting the solution at global conferences and advocating for adoption by the United Nations and Himalayan countries to preserve the region's glaciers
